Robert Post Comedy Theater returns to Ohio Wesleyan University this weekend with his “One-Man Variety Show.”

“I’m a funny person with a lot of technical skill – circus clown, vaudeville, variety,” Post said. “I’m throwing stuff out there and going for it. These works are all over the map. Some of them are borderline existential, some are simple and funny.”

Post is a central Ohio-based comedian/actor/director/video artist who has created more than 30 works in a four-decade career. He’s earned awards and fellowships for this work. Post has also received accolades from The Today Show’s Matt Lauer (“I like him because he’s insane”) and The New York Times (for his “keen sense of satire and the absurd”).

“I started off as a theater major in college, and soon discovered that you get typecast really quickly,” Post said. “You play a certain role, and they want you to stick with that role. Then I discovered I had a talent for creating my own unusual and odd material. The more I did it, the more success I had, and it took off from there.”

This will be Post’s third performance at OWU.

“They kind of run me through the cycle – every fifth year they’ll bring me back, so I’m fresh again (to a new set of students),” he said. “I make my living touring, I’ve performed in all 50 states, nine countries. I’m proud and happy about that, but nothing makes me happier than doing a show that’s within easy driving distance of where I live. In my world, that’s a miracle.”

A visiting artist at Ohio State University, Post will also be doing workshops with Ohio Wesleyan students on Jan. 17 and next week, culminating with an in-house comedy sketch show by the students Jan. 24.

“The kids will do kind of a funky presentation of things they’ve learned from me in class that they’ve created. It’s not just the show. It’s really sweet – I get to work with the students, get to know the students, and I teach them to write their own stuff, how to create their own material.”

Post will perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 18 in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. Tickets cost $20, or $5 senior citizens and non-OWU students (with school ID), free for OWU students and employees (with school ID); by contacting,, or 740-368-3629. For more information about Post, visit
