The Delaware General Health District will be open to the public more often starting this month.
The clinic, 3 W. Winter St., will add Thursday morning childhood clinic hours and will expand adult morning clinic hours and hours on the last Tuesday of each month.
“We wanted to accommodate people’s busy lives,” said DGHD director of nursing Joyce Richmond. “Our effort here is to help community members protect their health from illness or other health hazards by giving them additional chances to do so.”
DGHD spokesperson Tracy Whittaker said the change is planned to be a permanent addition to clinic hours.
“We wanted to add more flexibility of hours to accommodate our clients, especially a morning option for childhood immunizations,” she said. “Most often children come to the clinic for recommended childhood immunizations. Adults come in mostly for immunizations as well as various health screenings.”
In 2013, DGHD provided vaccinations to 554 children from 2 months old through age 18. Those vaccines included 1,496 childhood immunizations plus 745 flu vaccinations. For ages 19 and older, the DGHD provided 500 adult immunizations plus 1,512 flu vaccinations.
The DGHD Clinic also provides services such as blood pressure checks; blood glucose monitoring and HbA1c testing; cholesterol testing; and tuberculosis skin tests.
“Expanding hours give the public added convenience to access services to meet their busy schedules,” Whittaker said.
She said the expansion of clinic hours will not increase costs to the DGHD. The clinic is paid for with public health funds and primarily funded by the health levy, and Whittaker said staff responsibilities are being adjusted to help properly staff the clinic for the longer hours.
“Protecting the health of the community is our goal,” said Health Commissioner Shelia Hiddleson. “Through these extended clinics, we want to make it easier on residents to come in and take care of important immunizations or health screenings.”
New clinic hours are:
• 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (adult clinic)
• 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (adult clinic)

• 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Thursday (child clinic)
