St. Mary’s Church will host an Italian Dinner fundraiser in support of Family Promise April 29.
The dinner will also include a silent auction and 50/50 raffle to raise money for the Delaware shelter that works to move homeless families off the street and into homes of their own.
“We recently got a new director, and a new house, and its good work,” said board member Jerry Valentine. “We want to continue doing that and we can’t do that without the support of the community.”
The shelter is based on an interfaith model that originally had a rotating list of 26 churches that sponsored families and hosted families. Last year, the shelter found a permanent home.
“We’ve made a lot of progress and helped a lot of families,” Valentine said. “The good part that we do for the homeless (families) is we don’t separate the men and the women. We keep them as a family unit.”
About a dozen churches continue to help out by bringing food to the shelter.
Valentine said the shelter is in need of community support and is still looking for businesses to sponsor the fundraiser and donate items for the silent auction.
“The community has a big heart,” he said.
Dinner is open to the public and tickets can be purchased at the door, but purchase of advanced tickets is encouraged. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. The fundraiser will start at 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s, 82 E. William St. Take-out food will be available. For more information, call 740-362-7817.
