SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP – Police are warning residents to be aware of a scam involving people asking for money for the Shawnee baseball team.

Police were called Friday to the area of Fort Amanda Road and Hawthorne Drive over two people asking for money for the baseball team. The person who reported it followed the two and saw them shedding their jackets and walking away on foot, the Shawnee Township Police Department reported.

The caller flagged down a responding officer and pointed out one of the individuals. Police detained that person. He told officers he was selling magazines, police reported.

He had a large amount of cash, checks and receipts on him when he was arrested. The second person has not been captured, police reported.

Anyone who may have given money to the men is asked to contact Detective Don Marik at 419-227-1115.

The Shawnee schools athletic department is not collecting money in that way.
