The Buckeye Valley Alumni Band will open the Harmony in the Park concert series at 7 p.m. July 6 at the Bicentennial Park Gazebo, at Park Avenue and Washington Street.
“As far back as I can remember, we’ve been the opener,” band director Bill Everhart told The Gazette. “We’ll play some patriotic numbers, a couple marches, some show tunes and big band stuff.”
The Alumni Band consists of brass, wind and percussion players, with about 40 members and a core of 30 musicians at any given show. Although many musicians are Buckeye Valley alumni, Everhart said friends of alumni also participate.
“It’s pretty open. There’s two retired band directors in there, and another guy who’s a former band director, and a gal who is still teaching music,” he said. “I think they just like the joy of playing. It’s not like a job.”
Everhart, who has run the alumni band since retiring from BVHS in 1988, said the band rehearses summer Sunday nights starting in May and performs a dozen concerts in the summer.
“It’s pretty enjoyable and a lot of fun,” Everhart said of the Harmony shows. “We have a good crowd show up – they’re very appreciative and we like doing it.”
For more information on joining the band, call Everhart at 740-369-2333.
Series presenter the Ohio Heartland Chapter of Sweet Adelines asks audience goers to bring lawn chairs and blankets. In case of rain, the concerts will be held at the YMCA.
