Every­one has a dream, and Raechel Root is no dif­fer­ent. The Olen­tangy High School senior’s ambi­tion is to attend Colum­bia Uni­ver­sity, live in New York City, work as a copy edi­tor for a pub­lish­ing house and write her own fiction.

Program provides free eyeglasses to local students

Aaron Moore of the Sal­va­tion Army said there is a need for both vol­un­teer and sea­sonal employee bell ringers this sea­son. Moore said while dona­tions are up a bit at this point from last year, and he still hopes to make this year’s goal of $100,000. DACC’s ‘food fight’ benefits PIN

Stu­dents in Jim Warner’s law enforce­ment class at the Delaware Area Career Cen­ter (DACC) won the school’s annual food fight Wednes­day. This food fight did not end with a mess in a cafe­te­ria, how­ever. Instead, it resulted in the col­lec­tion of more than 4,000 food items, and hats, gloves, coats and scarves for Peo­ple In Need, Inc. of Delaware County’s annual Hol­i­day Clearinghouse.

Women’s City Club tree festival to benefit low-income women

The Fes­ti­val of Trees, the Women’s City Club’s annual hol­i­day fundraiser, will not only give Christ­mas spirit to those attend­ing, but will also help local low income women have safe, afford­able, tran­si­tional hous­ing. The Fes­ti­val of the Trees will be held Sat­ur­day at 135 N. Franklin St., Delaware.

It took more than 200 books to con­struct the 4-foot tree, Allt­mont said, adding that “while the tree was cre­ated by library staff, it was built by the peo­ple who gen­er­ously donated us their gently-used books.” Nicole Fowles, com­mu­ni­ca­tions spe­cial­ist, not pic­tured, also worked on the project.

Big Walnut’s Meade ready for next step in life

Senior year has gone by fast, con­cedes Big Wal­nut High School senior Ash­ley Meade. “It’s crazy. I remem­ber walk­ing into high school my fresh­man year and was told it would fly by fast. It did,” she said.

Grin and ‘bare’ it

Buck­eye Val­ley High School indus­trial arts teacher Robert Hoak has not shaved his beard since the mid-1970s. Nei­ther his daugh­ter, Melissa Crum, pic­tured, nor his wife of 33 years, Bobbi Hoak, have seen him with­out a beard — that is until Fri­day. High school stu­dents and staff raised money for the Buck­eye Val­ley Food Pantry with a “No-Shave Novem­ber” fundraiser, expect­ing to raise $400. The fund grew to $2,100 with the added incen­tive of see­ing Robert Hoak shave off his beard for the cause.
