Carbohydrate-rich foods are not the enemy

Many people think carbs are the enemy. They are not. There is room in a person’s meal plan to include carbohydrate foods. In fact, 50 to 60 percent of the total calories in a healthy diet usually come from carbohydrate sources.

Handle with care and keep smiling

Mother taught me that a person is known by the company that he keeps and that happiness is contagious. Psychologists tell us that being surrounded by optimistic people can be a positive influence.

What once was old is now new

While viewing an old western on television, I watched the owner of the general store fill an order for a pioneer woman. The basic supplies of flour, lard, salt and shotgun shells were loaded into her gunny sack and taken to the buckboard for the long ride home.

Stretching to find a theme that fits

Each article that I create has a theme. At times, it is just a nutrition fact and the complicated details to substantiate the information. Yet some articles are just a story that I have to stretch to find a way to weave a nutrition fact.

Enjoying Easter eggs after Easter

While researching the longevity of a leftover hard-boiled egg, I discovered some very fascinating facts. This can be interesting news because a week after Easter many people may be in a quandary over the safety of the colored eggs still in the refrigerator.

Lifestyle changes can make a major difference

The response from the news that I lowered my cholesterol numbers by changing my lifestyle has been overwhelming. In 2011, my total cholesterol and the LDL cholesterol were high enough to cause my physician to prescribe a statin drug for me.

Two new facts for National Nutrition Month

In commemoration of National Nutrition Month, I have two announcements to make. March has been National Nutrition Month for decades, and each year I make it a point to write something special to honor the stuff that we chew and swallow.
