It implies that the heart has stopped working, but it actually refers to a beating heart that is too weak or impaired to pump enough oxygen and blood to the cells. Of the four million women who give birth each year in the United States, one-third experience some type of pregnancy-related complication, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weights and five times more likely to die than babies born to mothers who receive care.

The post Prenatal care key to healthy pregnancy appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

Is it a cold or the flu? Sometimes it’s hard to tell, but it’s important to know the difference because the flu can have serious complications such as pneumonia and even cause death. Annual flu-related deaths in the United States have ranged from a low of 3,000 to a high of 49,000 over the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of those deaths occur among high-risk groups with pulmonary disease (such as asthma or COPD), diabetes and heart disease.

The post Cold vs. flu appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.
