Friends of the Library to hold Bargain Book Fair

The Friends of the Delaware County District Library will hold another gigantic Bargain Book Fair this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Delaware Main Library, 84 E. Winter St., and in conjunction with the Delaware Arts Festival. The Friends Book Fairs are truly a sight to see, with thousands of books, DVDs, videos, and magazines for adults, teens and children, well organized to make it easy to seek out just what you’re looking for.

During the library’s levy campaign, we made a pledge to the community to upgrade the existing facilities, as well as to build the new Orange Branch. Upgrading the library

In our continuing efforts to fulfill the campaign promises made in 2009, the Delaware County District Library is currently upgrading its Integrated Library System (ILS) to serve you better. You’re no doubt asking yourself, “What the heck is an ILS?” It is the software and hardware that allows us to combine the information about all of the books, DVDs and other library material with the circulation of those items.

Tax filing forms will be here, but aren’t yet

When the first of the year rolls around, one of the questions that is asked frequently at the Delaware County District Library is, “Do you have tax forms yet?” The library has been the site for the distribution of federal, state and local tax forms for dozens of years, and we are happy to provide this service, but we can only put out the forms as we receive them from the taxing agencies. We recently received an official email from the Internal Revenue Service that told us that they do not know when forms will be delivered to the library.

Keep on top of library hours

If the weather so far this winter is any indication, it’s likely that we are in for a snowy few weeks! When the weather turns ugly, unexpected closures are likely to occur at the Delaware County District Library. We certainly do not want to inconvenience you in any way; however, for your safety and the safety of our staff, the library will always and immediately close when the Delaware County Sheriff issues a Level 2 or Level 3 snow emergency, and will remain closed until the level has been reduce or canceled.

Happy holidays from the Board of Trustees and the staff of the Delaware County District Library. This time of year is certainly filled with family and friends, and to allow the library staff to enjoy time with their families, we will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. All branches will resume their regular hours on Wednesday with several terrific programs scheduled.

Thanksgiving is traditionally the time to take a few moments to reflect on that for which we are thankful. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Delaware community for your continued, more-than-a-century long support of the library, support that began in 1855 with the first movement to build a library in Delaware. In 1897, a group of stalwart women took it upon themselves to start a library with 30 books.

In what may come as a pleasant surprise to people who fear the Facebook generation has given up on reading, a new report from the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project reveals the prominent role of books, libraries and technology in the lives of young readers, ages 16 to 29. In fact, the report found that “about 8 in 10 Americans under the age of 30 have read a book in the past year. They’re more likely to read, and they’re also more likely to be using their library.”

This exciting “DCDL After Hours Concert,” entitled “A Songwriter’s Journey through American Music” features singer/songwriter Angela Easterling who will perform many of her own original songs interspersed with selections of classic folk, roots, country and rock tunes. She will also discuss the craft of songwriting and tell the stories behind her songs, weaving in some of the history of roots music and the artists who have influenced her writing.

Have you ever thought how nice it would be to know about new books and DVDs that are being added to the shelves at the Delaware County District Library each month? Library staff is selecting and ordering thousands of dollars of new material every month, and it may be somewhat difficult to keep up with all of those new titles. In July alone, the library added 1,159 adult books, 879 juvenile books, 697 newspapers, 419 magazines, 301 DVDs, 136 books on CD, 116 donations, 30 juvenile audio kits, 14 MP3s, and two Playaways to the Delaware, Powell, Ostrander and Orange facilities.

Reading programs spell success

The children of Delaware County made the Delaware County District Library’s 2012 Summer Reading Club another spectacular and record-breaking success. Although totals are still being compiled, more than 6,000 children read books, attended programs and received stickers and prizes for their efforts. More importantly, their involvement in the Library’s summer reading club let them hone and develop their reading skills, making them more prepared to start the upcoming school year.

It is impossible to believe, but the Delaware County District Library’s Orange Branch celebrated its first birthday on May 15. We passed that milestone with little fanfare — simply a “Happy Birthday Orange Branch” sign in the lobby — but as with all days at the Orange Branch, May 15 was a bustling day for staff and customers.
