Piecing together the library’s display of quilts

The quilts are back! The wonderfully talented members of the Delaware Piecemakers Quilt Guild have once again graciously lent their quilts to the Delaware County District Library for a month-long display at the Delaware Main Library, 84 E. Winter St., to celebrate Nation Quilt Month. The quilts, draped artistically from the railing on the mezzanine enhance the Library with color, creativity and warmth.

Library launches revised, improved website

This week, I need to tell you about three significant events at the Delaware County District Library. I hope you have had a chance to visit the library’s website, delawarelibrary.org, in the past few days. After months of diligence, discussion and much experimentation, the library launched its newly revised and, I think, vastly improved website this week. The development of the website helps us to fulfill our pledge to the community to upgrade technology, and I think you will agree that the website is certainly a major upgrade to our former one.

Trash or treasure? Find out at the library

Do you have a family heirloom, a curious knickknack or an objet d’art hanging around your house and you’ve always wondered if it is worth anything? Here’s your chance to find out, and to help out the Delaware County District Library’s Friends of the Library (FOL) at the same time.

Library adheres to federal Child Internet Protection Act

I recently saw a piece on TV about customers at public library viewing pornography on the library’s Internet computers, in plain view of anyone in the library including children. I found this account to be disturbing, as I am sure many of you would. Please understand that what happened at that library will not happen at the Delaware County District Library. We observe and adhere to the Child Internet Protection Act, a federal law that address concerns about access to offensive content on library computers, and the software we have installed filters out sexually offensive and pornographic content. The filtering software that is currently in place also blocks any phishing or hacking with malware and spyware, too.

Librarians can assist you around the clock

It’s 10:30 p.m. You’re writing a report for work, and you realize that you need a critical question answered. Even though you’ve searched the Internet, you still haven’t found what you need. And the Delaware County District Library — with its knowledgeable and search-savvy librarians — is closed for the evening. What do you do?

‘Great Decisions’ world affairs education series runs through March

One of the community programs that the Delaware County District Library has been involved with for many years is the “Great Decisions” program, a free discussion series developed in 1954 by the Foreign Policy Association. “Great Decisions 2012” focuses on current U.S. Foreign Policy, and you can learn more about the areas up for discussion this year by reading the accompanying booklet at the Main Library, 84 E. Winter St. or the Orange Branch, 7171 Gooding Blvd. This short booklet is shelved behind the Information Desks and contains chapters on the Middle East, cybersecurity, Afghanistan, the oceans, Indonesia and energy geopolitics. There are fliers with details of the series including dates, speakers and topics for discussion available, too.

Tax time means a trip to the library

It’s that time of year again, and dozens of you have already visited the Delaware County District Library seeking out tax forms. We have put tables for pre-printed federal, state and local tax forms in the vestibules at all locations for your convenience, but if you don’t find the form you’re looking for, you can always use the library’s Internet computers to search the IRS and Ohio Department of Taxation websites to print the form you need.

Meeting supply, demand of e-books

Over the last few months, the number of e-books that you have downloaded from the Delaware County District Library to iPads, iPhones, Nooks, Kindles, Droids, computers and other devices has increased a lot each month. In December 2011, the number of downloads totalled more than 2000 — a 240 percent increase from December 2010. Overall, e-book downloads grew by more than 153 percent in the last year.
