Recent tragic events involving firearms have spurred debate over gun control. Those who support stricter gun control laws have provided research and statistics to support their agenda while on the other side of the debate, our Constitution clearly gives citizens the right to own firearms. As the debate continues, we can say without a doubt that our country is divided on this issue and no matter what our government decides to do, some people will not be satisfied.

Local news stories have recently focused  on the events in Delaware and Marion where a man has reportedly tried to lure children into his vehicle. The local media has done a wonderful job assisting law enforcement with providing important information and warnings to parents. Although the warnings are necessary, the message that sometimes comes across to children is that there is a “stranger danger” alert.

Another school year has begun and parents are again faced with the emotional strain that a school year brings. Parents are dealing with their children being away at school for most of the day, and then homework and extracurricular activates fill the rest of the week. It is sometimes difficult for parents to spend much time with their kids. It is important to remember that quality time is more important than the quantity of time we spend with our kids

The post Teaching kids the difference between ‘tattling’ and ‘telling’ appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

Tragic events, like the recent Colorado movie theater shooting, can leave children scared and confused. Children will look to the adults in their lives for guidance and comfort. Children need to be reminded that most people are good and would never want to hurt them, but there are some who do want to hurt others. It is important to remember to educate children and not scare them when talking about tragic events. Some fear it is all right because a small amount of fear will remind children to be cautious without being paranoid.

The post Educate when talking to children about tragic events appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

Inhalant abusers will often use household chemicals to obtain their high. The inhalant problem came to public attention in the 1950s when news media began reporting on young people sniffing model airplane glue to get a cheap high. Since then, young people have discovered most any household chemical — from nail polish remover to air fresheners — can give them the euphoric effect they are seeking.

The post Inhalant abuse is a serious problem appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

The latest survey released by the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future shows teen alcohol consumption is at the lowest level since the study began in 1975. The survey revealed the number of teens who drink alcohol has decreased about 25 percent over the past 20 years with about 54 percent reporting they drank in 1991 and about 40 percent reporting they drank in 2011. Researchers contribute the decrease to the attitude society has toward under-age drinking.

The post Teens increasingly perceive drinking as unacceptable behavior appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

Teens are being pressured by parents and society to act more like adults and make adult- like decisions. In today’s economy, some teens are being asked to be a surrogate parent to younger siblings while mom and dad take on extra work to make ends meet. Getting into college is more competitive and teens are feeling the pressures to make a decision about college at younger ages.

The post Teens will listen to parents more than anybody else appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

Adolescence can be one of the most difficult periods of time in a youth's life. It can be even more difficult if he or she is experiencing an attraction to someone of the same gender. Even when a youth who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) has the support of his or her immediate family, the youth will certainly have to deal with the struggles of being accepted by society. A recent survey indicates youth who identify as LGBT are more likely to engage in risky behavior than those who identify as heterosexual.

The post Adults need to be supportive of youth who identify as LGBT appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.
