The scoop on greening your doggie’s doo

According to an article in Natural Dog Magazine, in the U.S., we dump more than 10 million tons of dog waste into our landfills each year which accounts for as much as four percent of the landfill. The methane from dog waste is supposedly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and, according to the EPA, “dog waste contributes to surface and ground water bacteria.” So, what’s a pet owner to do?

Trending: The No ‘Poo Movement

Okay, this is not what you think it is. This movement is not one that is against any sort of bowel function. This is a growing group of grassroots individuals who don’t use shampoo or conditioner in their hair but allow for more natural hair care. I did catch your attention, didn’t I?

Think Local: Celebrate Earth Day in Delaware

Make your Earth Day a local affair with some eco-activities planned in partnership by Sustainable Delaware, the League of Women Voters of Delaware County, Delaware Career Center and Delaware City Schools & Ohio Wesleyan University. With the theme “Together, Taking Responsibility for Our Future,” the events kick-off on Sunday, April 21 with a Freecycle & Expo at Mingo Park in the Hilborn Room from noon to 4 p.m.

Put some green on your calendar

Mother Nature is painting Spring with a palette of white lately, but you can put some green on your calendar with these fun and educational events for the whole family.

Our kids: The next generation of green

For any parent who is concerned about the environment, I think one of the things we strive to do well is share our values and knowledge and love of the natural world with our kids.

Dreams of spring, France

What’s great about March is the fact that spring break (or if you don’t have kids in school anymore, just spring itself), is visible on the distant horizon. No, it’s not a mirage, it really is coming and we will soon be able to tuck another winter away on the shelf and safely unfold our thoughts of revitalizing sunshine and blossoming landscapes.

Family farms key to eating local food

The “local food” movement has gained a lot of steam over the past few years, and with good reason. Eating seasonally and closer to home means fresher, healthier food for your family, not to mention the fossil fuels it saves by not having to be shipped from the other side of the country (or beyond!). If you’ve never enjoyed a salad of baby greens picked just a few hours earlier, you truly don’t know just how delicious and deeply satisfying a simple salad can be.

Goodbye, Casper the Camel

This doesn’t pertain to green living, per se, but I wanted to pay tribute to a friend of mine who recently passed away. He was a local Delaware supporter that many of the downtown merchants probably knew or at least would recognize.
