According to an article in Natural Dog Magazine, in the   U.S., we dump more than 10 million tons of dog waste into our landfills each year which accounts for as much as four percent of the landfill. The methane from dog waste is supposedly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and, according to the EPA, “dog waste contributes to surface and ground water bacteria.” So, what’s a pet owner to do?

The post The scoop on greening your doggie’s doo appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

What’s great about March is the fact that spring break (or if you don’t have kids in school anymore, just spring itself), is visible on the distant horizon. No, it’s not a mirage, it really is coming and we will soon be able to tuck another winter away on the shelf and safely unfold our thoughts of revitalizing sunshine and blossoming landscapes.

The “local food” movement has gained a lot of steam over the past few years, and with good reason. Eating seasonally and closer to home means fresher, healthier food for your family, not to mention the fossil fuels it saves by not having to be shipped from the other side of the country (or beyond!). If you’ve never enjoyed a salad of baby greens picked just a few hours earlier, you truly don’t know just how delicious and deeply satisfying a simple salad can be.

For some people, this isn’t a big deal, but for others, just the thought of it is such a big leap that it felt like the subject deserved its own column.

With the new year comes new ideas and I thought of this one in the middle of the night. That’s when most of my good ideas come — at night when my brain is finally free to roam. For awhile now I have been having a hard time getting my columns written-not for lack of ideas, but time. I thought maybe the moment had arrived for me to retire my virtual pen and mark it all up as a good run. But I really enjoy writing and sharing info in The Green Notebook. So, what to do? That’s when I thought about column sharing. Why not invite someone to help me out every other week and, thereby, keep the column going and keep it interesting?

The post Column sharing: Now that’s green appeared first on The Delaware Gazette.

I have been on hiatus from writing this past week thanks to some broken bones — not mine, but two of the four kids. Michael, who plays on his fourth-grade football team, tripped in his bedroom and fell nose first into the toy chest. Oh, the irony — here I was worried about football injuries. Not to be outdone, Sammy (almost 15 months old) fell and fractured his upper arm the very next weekend. Our 90-pound dog accidentally took him out when we were playing in the back yard.

If you’ve ever read any of my columns in the past five years, then you already know I am a huge fan of shopping locally and I’m a darn proud supporter of our local shops, eateries and businesses. Delaware is a great place to live and is fortunate to have a thriving downtown (which is up to all of us to support). With that in mind, I have to share about a great new store that just opened in downtown Delaware called Carousel Closet, a consignment shop for infant, children’s, juniors and maternity clothing.

It’s not just the center with its excellent educational programs and outreach to school children or their amazing and dedicated staff — it’s the call of the wild deep in our souls that beckons us to explore this gorgeous farm and woodlands.

When I have that rare moment of quiet, alone time, one of my favorite things to do is brew a cup of tea and watch an episode of “Good Neighbors,” a British sit-com that ran from 1975-78. I used to watch reruns of the program when I was in high school back in the ’80s. Let’s face it, with only three local channels and PBS, the TV pickings were slim so we watched a lot of public television, which is a good thing although I am certain I groused about it then. In addition to the big network programs like “The Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island, “Dallas” and “Dukes of Hazard,” I could be found watching “Fawlty Towers,” “Masterpiece Theatre” and others, but my favorite was “Good Neighbors.” So for this past Christmas, I unashamedly asked for the complete DVD set and my dad, also a PBS fan, indulged me.

It’s that time of year again — time to consider what new habits you will resolve to practice in the New Year. It’s time to make a fresh start. I like to call my resolutions New Year Suggestions. Maybe it makes me feel less guilty when I don’t accomplish them like I thought I would. On the other hand, maybe it helps me incorporate the new ideas into my life because I really don’t like being told what to do, even if it is by my own self!

No, it isn’t just chewing your turkey slowly or resting in between the cranberry sauce and the pumpkin pie (although I would highly recommend both of those actions).
