The “local food” movement has gained a lot of steam over the past few years, and with good reason. Eating seasonally and closer to home means fresher, healthier food for your family, not to mention the fossil fuels it saves by not having to be shipped from the other side of the country (or beyond!). If you’ve never enjoyed a salad of baby greens picked just a few hours earlier, you truly don’t know just how delicious and deeply satisfying a simple salad can be.

This doesn’t pertain to green living, per se, but I wanted to pay tribute to a friend of mine who recently passed away. He was a local Delaware supporter that many of the downtown merchants probably knew or at least would recognize.

In my last column, I outlined a few ideas for “green” resolutions for 2013. One item that was screaming to be added was to enjoy one meatless meal each week. For some people, this isn’t a big deal, but for others, just the thought of it is such a big leap that it felt like the subject deserved its own column.
I don’t know about you, but I am itching for Farmer’s Market season. I know, I know, there are many months to wait. My thoughts, like many of yours, are turning to spring and while I am not planning a garden, I am planning my spring eating. In the meantime, I am getting by with Winter Farmer’s Markets and other indoor markets like the year-round Delaware County Community Market.

With the new year comes new ideas and I thought of this one in the middle of the night. That’s when most of my good ideas come — at night when my brain is finally free to roam. For awhile now I have been having a hard time getting my columns written-not for lack of ideas, but time. I thought maybe the moment had arrived for me to retire my virtual pen and mark it all up as a good run. But I really enjoy writing and sharing info in The Green Notebook. So, what to do? That’s when I thought about column sharing. Why not invite someone to help me out every other week and, thereby, keep the column going and keep it interesting?

Is your New Year’s Resolution to save money? Who doesn’t love to save time and money when shopping? That’s exactly what a new local website I discovered promises. Founded in October by a Delaware mother of three, Short Cut Saver is a fantastic resource and truly is a one-stop shop to find out what’s on sale at local stores as well as finding coupons and much more.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. That’s how the song goes, right? But if your finances are tight or you are pressed for time due to working and family demands, well, it can be the most stressful time of year. And that’s not good. Sure is hard to remain cheerful and full of the Christmas spirit when you’re just plain stressed out!
