‘Good Neighbors’ keeps me laughing

When I have that rare moment of quiet, alone time, one of my favorite things to do is brew a cup of tea and watch an episode of “Good Neighbors,” a British sit-com that ran from 1975–78. I used to watch reruns of the program when I was in high school back in the ’80s. Let’s face it, with only three local channels and PBS, the TV pickings were slim so we watched a lot of public television, which is a good thing although I am certain I groused about it then. In addition to the big network programs like “The Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island, “Dallas” and “Dukes of Hazard,” I could be found watching “Fawlty Towers,” “Masterpiece Theatre” and others, but my favorite was “Good Neighbors.” So for this past Christmas, I unashamedly asked for the complete DVD set and my dad, also a PBS fan, indulged me.

Think small, shop locally

I picked up a brochure about from a group called The Support Our Local Economy (SOLE) Coalition when I was visiting the Green on the Green Festival in downtown Worthington a few weeks ago. They have banded together with local businesses and organizations to create a Think Columbus First Campaign. I love this idea and think it would be so beneficial to have this in Delaware County.

Preserving seeds of the past for the future

Time to plant the garden or shop the farmer’s markets and you might want to be on the lookout for heirloom seeds and heirloom variety veggies. What, exactly, is an “heirloom” and why are they so sought after? Let me start the story with the need for a seed vault.

Welcome Farmer’s Market season

I love this time of year — ’tis the season for outdoor markets and they abound in Delaware County — so many opportunities, so little time. My goal this year is to make it to all of the markets below at least a few times each before it’s all over (which is much too quickly by my way of thinking).

Recommit yourself to making better choices

It’s been four months since I started a new diet — not really a diet, but a whole lifestyle change. As with many resolutions made at the beginning of a new year, I was “gung-ho” for the first, oh, month and a half, and have started to fade in these past few weeks.

Don’t miss these eco-events

I am amazed at all of the great eco-friendly events taking place in and around our county. Delaware is hopping with educational and family-friendly happenings. Here is a snapshot of some local events coming up that you might want to consider attending:

Earth Day 2012: Root Down

The Nature Conservancy and Green Columbus encourage you to “put your roots down” by connecting with the local environment and fellow central Ohioans at Earth Day 2012. A city-wide celebration is planned from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the new Columbus Commons (the former site of the City Center in downtown Columbus).

Growing your own produce is increasingly popular

With all the community gardens sprouting up around Delaware County, it is easy to see that growing your own produce is even more popular than it was even just a few years ago. That’s a good thing. Reaping the rewards of growing fruits and vegetables is a great way to reconnect with nature and the origins of our food.
