
Debating various career paths, Jessica Stayton determined that all her preferences were either related to science or people. “I really enjoy people. Talking things over, helping to deal with emotions,” the Big Walnut senior said of her decision to major in psychology. And while she has not ruled out the possibility of research, she thinks she would prefer to work directly with people.

Amanda Gu is not your typical high school senior. Unlike most, she finds diseased organs interesting. But then not every senior is contemplating a career in medicine. Amanda, an Olentangy Liberty student, developed her interest in becoming a doctor the summer before her sophomore year when she attended an anatomy and physiology camp at Wright State University. It was then that she had her first taste of medicine and was able to work on two human cadavers.

Senior year is going by quick with still lots to do for Delaware Christian School’s Ryan Zinn. “It’s going fast,” Ryan said, adding that he looks forward to prom and the annual senior trip. As class treasurer, he will be responsible for collecting funds from classmates for the trip.

Community service is a big part of Delaware Hayes’ Miriam Gibbs’ life. It all began with the Girl Scouts, or Girl Guides as they are called in Canada where Mariam hails from. She came to the United States when she was 7. “I’m trying to make community service a life style,” she said. That goal is reflected in Miriam’s busy schedule. She regularly works at the Free Store, helping with People In Need (PIN) activities, and is also working to start a youth group for mentally ill teens at Safe Harbor Delaware.

Jaclyn Penny sees herself someday as a psychologist at a rehabilitation center or as a school psychologist — maybe even at Buckeye Valley. But for now senior year is in full swing, and as Jaclyn said it’s exciting, but “it goes by fast. Definitely reality setting in.”

Big Walnut’s Conner Jones has good advice for others. “It’s good to be involved with everything. You meet new people, make new friends. It opens a lot of doors,” he said. The senior should know, he has been involved in school activities and in leadership roles since the fifth grade when he first served on student council.

Olentangy High School senior Marta Kosmyna is considering the foreign service for a career. “I’m hoping to be a foreign service officer, maybe someday a diplomat,” Marta said, adding it does not matter which country. Coming to the United States when she was 6, Marta speaks both English and Ukrainian fluently. She has also had five years of French and can both speak and read Russian. “Languages come pretty easily.”

Senior Ali Kelly has switched gears from being in music and the arts earlier in her high school career to a totally different path — she is now in the welding program at the Delaware Area Career Center. And her future promises to take yet another direction; Ali has decided after graduation to attend the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, part of Universal Technical Institute, in Phoenix. Originally, she was interested in marine mechanics (“I’ve always liked the sea.”), then engineering, followed by art school.
