hurley_melissa2

Senior year hasn’t hit Melissa Hurley yet. It is something the Hayes High School senior said she is thankful for as she does not want to slack off. But senior year has already seen the closure of some things for Melissa — marching band season is over as is bowling season. Though there are ample music opportunities yet in the remainder of the school year that Melissa will be involved in. There is pit to play in for the upcoming musical, “Legally Blonde,” and also state and district contests for orchestra where she plays trumpet, and concert band where she plays French horn. Melissa also plays trumpet in jazz band, so there are lots of practices in her schedule.

Kevan Green has already learned many valuable life lessons. The Buckeye Valley senior plays quarterback for the Barons and was pleased they had a respectable final season with a record of 6–4, earning second team all conference. He admitted the record his junior year was not quite as good at 4–6.

Big Walnut’s Stayton personifies service above self

jessica_stayon_web2

Debating various career paths, Jessica Stayton determined that all her preferences were either related to science or people. “I really enjoy people. Talking things over, helping to deal with emotions,” the Big Walnut senior said of her decision to major in psychology. And while she has not ruled out the possibility of research, she thinks she would prefer to work directly with people.

Olentangy Liberty’s Gu is determined to excel

amanda_gu2

Amanda Gu is not your typical high school senior. Unlike most, she finds diseased organs interesting. But then not every senior is contemplating a career in medicine. Amanda, an Olentangy Liberty student, developed her interest in becoming a doctor the summer before her sophomore year when she attended an anatomy and physiology camp at Wright State University. It was then that she had her first taste of medicine and was able to work on two human cadavers.

Delaware Christian’s Zinn focuses on future

ryan_zinn2

Senior year is going by quick with still lots to do for Delaware Christian School’s Ryan Zinn. “It’s going fast,” Ryan said, adding that he looks forward to prom and the annual senior trip. As class treasurer, he will be responsible for collecting funds from classmates for the trip.

For Hayes’ Gibbs, service is a lifestyle

miriam_gibbs2

Community service is a big part of Delaware Hayes’ Miriam Gibbs’ life. It all began with the Girl Scouts, or Girl Guides as they are called in Canada where Mariam hails from. She came to the United States when she was 7. “I’m trying to make community service a life style,” she said. That goal is reflected in Miriam’s busy schedule. She regularly works at the Free Store, helping with People In Need (PIN) activities, and is also working to start a youth group for mentally ill teens at Safe Harbor Delaware.

BV’s Penny will focus on helping others

jaclyn_penny2

Jaclyn Penny sees herself someday as a psychologist at a rehabilitation center or as a school psychologist — maybe even at Buckeye Valley. But for now senior year is in full swing, and as Jaclyn said it’s exciting, but “it goes by fast. Definitely reality setting in.”

BW’s Jones goes above and beyond

conner_jones2

Big Walnut’s Conner Jones has good advice for others. “It’s good to be involved with everything. You meet new people, make new friends. It opens a lot of doors,” he said. The senior should know, he has been involved in school activities and in leadership roles since the fifth grade when he first served on student council.
