Big Walnut’s Harrison Street Elementary School is teaming up with Sunbury Christian Church to pilot a “Bountiful Backpacks” program for the 2015-16 school year.

Big Walnut Board of Education President Mindy Meyer said the program will offer nutritious meals and snacks for children to take home over weekends and extended breaks, free of charge, courtesy of Sunbury Christian Church.

“Bags will be distributed to participating students on Fridays and on the last day of school before an extended break, with every effort made to keep the food distribution discreet,” Meyer said during last week’s school board meeting. “Six families and 19 individuals have signed up to receive the meals.”

Meyer said the students would receive nonperishable meals and snacks, with all food and labor for the program provided and funded by church members.

“Based on the success of the program, it may be expanded to other elementary buildings in the district,” Meyer said.

Meyer said sign-up information is kept confidential.
