Main Street Delaware’s Aug. 7 First Friday will feature a free “Picnic with the Cops” celebration that includes a dunk tank, children’s police academy training camp, obstacle course, games, hot dogs and freeze pops for all to enjoy.

The Delaware City Police Department, in partnership with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, will provide police cruisers and a mounted police unit, with horse and officer, for little ones to discover during the 6 to 9 p.m. event. A portion of North Sandusky Street will be closed to accommodate the event.

During First Friday, residents are invited to recognize and thank Officer Rita Mendel, who is retiring after more than a decade of service. Mendel helped to develop Delaware’s “Picnic with the Cops” event. To honor her, residents also are encouraged to write cards of thanks and send them to Main Street Delaware Inc., 20 E. Winter St., Delaware OH 43015.

The Aug. 7 First Friday is sponsored by Barley Hopsters, 1 N. Sandusky St., which earned a Main Street Delaware design award this spring for its façade renovation. It and many downtown businesses will be open late for the First Friday event.
