Man indicted for assaulting corrections officer

A Delaware man in jail on rape charges has allegedly assaulted a corrections officer at the county jail.

Shawn Harrel, 39, of 84 Scottwood Court, was indicted again by a Delaware County grand jury Friday on a charge of harassment by inmate and a charge of vandalism, both fifth-degree felonies. Court documents say that he assaulted corrections officer Joshua Young last Sunday at the Delaware County Jail and caused serious property damage.

Officials from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office report Young sustained “physical abuse” by Harrel but would not say more because the investigation was ongoing.

The incident report also indicates a pulse oxygen meter, valued at $40, was damaged.

Harrel was in jail after he was arrested and charged with rape on July 9. He was indicted by a grand jury last week on three counts of rape.

He is scheduled for an arraignment in Delaware County Common Pleas Judge Everett Kruger’s court on July 29 on the rape charges. An arraignment for the assault charge has not yet been scheduled.

The rape charges allege that Harrel went to the home of a woman on Muirwood Village Drive and raped her three times on July 9, court documents say. The 40-year-old woman reported the attack to police later that morning and Harrel was then arrested.

Harrel, a sex offender registered with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, was convicted of gross sexual imposition in 1999 and was ordered to register as a sex offender and serve 15 months in prison.

Harrel also has convictions in Delaware County Common Pleas Court for unlawful sexual conduct, burglary and receiving stolen property.

Harrel was still in the county jail Friday afternoon.
