Matthew C. Huffman is Liberty Township’s new administrator.

Liberty Township trustees announced Huffman’s appointment at a special meeting Monday.

Huffman, a Columbus resident, had been serving as the township’s interim administrator since Dave Anderson was forced out in May after eight years at that position. After Anderson’s departure, trustees reviewed 24 applicants from various locations in central Ohio as well as a couple of candidates from out of state.

Huffman had been working as the township’s director of development and zoning before his promotion.

Trustees reported they had whittled the list of 24 candidates down to just six applicants by the beginning of July and would be conducting a series of interviews during the month to find the right candidate.

“We looked at a lot of candidates but [Huffman] had been doing a phenomenal job [as interim administrator],” said Trustee Shyra Eichhorn. “He had a lot of support within the department and had a great vibe.”

Eichhorn reported the decision to promote Huffman was a unanimous one.

“All the trustees fully supported [Huffman],” Eichhorn said. “It’s a great choice for the community and the township.”

“We did a thorough search and Matt rose to the top of the list,” said Trustee Thomas Mitchell. “His zoning experience will be a great asset as the township develops. I am excited to have Matt leading our team and look forward to working with him.”

“I’m very happy [about the appointment],” Huffman said Tuesday. He said he was glad he was promoted because it encourages opportunities for career growth within the township.

“Obviously, it was a positive experience,” Huffman said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity and bringing some good projects to the township.”

Huffman said he has been with the township for more than a year and is excited to move forward with several projects, including the bike trail extension and some drainage work for township residents.

Huffman said he has been working in the public and private sectors for 27 years, including positions in Dublin, Gahanna and the Richland County area.

Eichhorn said Huffman’s salary will be $90,000 annually.

Anderson made nearly $92,000 a year at the time of his departure.
