A team of 4-H members from Delaware County was the winner of the 2015 Ohio State Fair “Avian Bowl.”

The senior team included five members from various Delaware County 4-H clubs in grades 8-12.

The first-place winners are Cassady Calder from Golden Paws 4-H club, Jacob Wenner from Set 4 Success, Tammy McComis from Rabbits & Roosters, Clara Selle from Homegrown 4 Him and Kayla Eubank, also from Rabbits & Roosters. This team was coached by Laura Bain, adviser of Rabbits & Roosters 4-H group. The team captain is Jacob Wenner.

This year’s Avian Bowl was on July 25 at The Ohio State University 4-H Center. Six teams participated.

The teams participated in a double-elimination oral competition. The team was awarded points for accurate answers. Each round consisted of 32 questions, including spelling poultry-related words.

The teams were quizzed on various poultry topics that deal with turkeys and chickens, such as breeds, cooking with eggs, the need for poultry management, breeding, species, housing, health, embryology and poultry glossary definitions.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage youth to expand their knowledge of avian facts, and become proficient in poultry, management and related subjects.

The team will now represent Ohio in the National Avian Bowl this November. It will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, during the North American International Livestock Exposition. The group will also participate in the national poultry judging contest.

The Delaware County junior team (grades 4-7) placed fourth in the competition. Team members include Matthew Mills (team captain), Kylie Mills and Lizzy Swonger.
