Two drivers were arrested Friday as part of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s OVI checkpoint operation.

The highway patrol reports that during its checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday on Sawmill Parkway, two drivers were issued citations — one for driving without a license and the other for a temporary permit violation.

Troopers reported that nearby “saturation patrol units” conducted 52 traffic stops which resulted in the arrest of two impaired drivers. Those units also issued six other citations, including two for license violations.

Troopers say that during the operation, 504 vehicles traveled through the zone, with 245 checked and 11 diverted for further investigation.

The commander of the Delaware patrol post, Lt. Kevin Knapp, called the operation was “a success.”

“OVI checkpoints are always successful from an awareness and educational standpoint,” Knapp said. “Our goal is to deter and intercept impaired drivers anytime we can. During this checkpoint, we were able to educate 245 drivers about the importance of not driving impaired. In addition, two impaired drivers were removed from the roadway, preventing a possible tragedy.”

Troopers report the checkpoints are funded by federal grants and are designed to intercept impaired drivers.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and Powell police assisted in the operation.

Troopers conducted a similar operation on U.S. 23 in July which resulted in three arrests for impaired driving and an arrest for a suspended license.
