Pond clinic, fish sale offered by SWCD

The Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District has two upcoming events that feature ponds – a “pond clinic” on Thursday, Sept. 10, and its annual fish sale, which is ongoing until Oct. 9.

The pond clinic will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Preservation Parks’ Gallant Farm, 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road.

The clinic will feature two speakers — Eugene Braig, program director with Aquatic Ecosystems Extension at Ohio State University’s School of Environment and Natural Resources, and Scott Stephens, resource conservation program coordinator with the Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District.

Topics to be discussed include:

• Pond site selection and construction

• Proper maintenance of the area around the pond

• Weed and algae identification and control

• Aeration

• Fish stocking

• Attracting and deterring wildlife

The pond clinic costs $10 per family and attendees will receive the Ohio Pond Management Handbook, additional handout materials, and refreshments. Reservations are required by Sept. 9.

The fish sale offers largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid bluegill, channel catfish, shell crackers, fathead minnows, triploid white amur and yellow perch. With heavy rains this spring and summer, flooding may have flushed small fish through ponds’ overflow pipes or emergency spillways. The Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District’s annual fish sale is a convenient way to restock, district officials said.

Orders will be accepted through Oct. 9 and fish pick-up is scheduled for Oct. 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the district’s parking lot.

Visit the district’s website — at www.delawareswcd.org — to access the pond clinic reservation form or the fish sale order form or call 740-368-1921.
