Zoo’s baby penguin needs a name

A Humboldt penguin at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell needs a name, and the public has an opportunity to vote for their favorite of four options, say zoo officials.

Voting ends on June 27, and the winning name will be announced July 9.

The nominated names are Penny, Pippa, Penelope and Gwen.

Participants can cast one vote a day on the Columbus Zoo website, as well as an additional vote at any central Ohio Kroger location or at the zoo.

The yet-unnamed penguin was one of three Humboldt penguins chicks now residing at the zoo. The other two were named by zoo staff: Ziggy Stardust, who hatched March 17, is the female offspring of Asela and Chirriante; and Dr. Oswald Cobblepot (named after The Penguin in the Batman comics), who hatched March 20, is the male offspring of Ava and Gunter.

The public will be naming the female penguin that hatched March 18 to parents Katja and Hans.

These births are an important addition to the Humboldt penguin species, the populations of which are declining in their native habitats, officials say. The Columbus Zoo is one of only a few facilities in North America that is qualified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to participate in Humboldt Penguin Species Survival Plan breeding program.
