Hope Lutheran gets new pastor

Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church on Meredith State Road in Condit has a new pastor.

The Rev. Ben Meyer and his family are moving to the area from Woodworth, Illinois, where Meyer served for the past eight years at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School.

Born in Nebraska, Meyer has also lived in Colorado, Wyoming, Michigan, Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma. He graduated from Concordia University in Austin, Texas, in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in Biblical languages; and graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 2005 with a master’s of divinity.

“My first call was to the boot-heel of Missouri, seeking to help restart three small, struggling congregations,” Meyer said. “What drew me to Sunbury is the opportunity for outreach. Where I’m at now, it’s a small town — there’s limited opportunity to reach new people.”

Meyer said he enjoys sports.

“I played baseball in college, and look forward to having a minor league team nearby,” he said. “I’ve coached some Little League baseball, and I’m a big Cornhuskers fan.”

Meyer and his wife, Christine, have four children ages 3 to 12.

“We’re looking forward to getting to Sunbury and being able to serve the Lord in a new place,” Meyer added. “It’s an area I have never lived in, so it’s a chance to meet new people.”

There will be a formal service of installation for Meyer at 4 p.m. today at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Hope Evangelical Lutheran is at 15370 Meredith State Road.
