Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted a OVI checkpoint in Delaware County Friday evening and made seven arrests as a result.

Sgt. Geoff Freeman, of the Delaware post of the patrol, said Monday that the checkpoint was on U.S. 23 about a mile north of the Franklin County border and ran from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Troopers report 953 vehicles traveled through the zone and, of those vehicles, 351 vehicles were checked. Troopers report seven of the checked vehicles were diverted.

Troopers also reported that five OVI arrests were made along with a felony arrest for receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor drug arrest.

Freeman said the operation was a success and said one of the goals, apart from stopping drunken drivers, was to educate drivers about OVI laws. Freeman said checking with the diverted drivers is just one way of educating about the laws.

Troopers report the OVI checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds, was planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

Freeman said officers from the Delaware Police Department and the Shawnee Hills Police Department, along with deputies from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, assisted.
