Second Big Walnut memories penned by Allen

Suzanne Allen may not think of herself as an historian but, if you look at the body of Big Walnut area local history she has collected, organized and published, the term “historian” applies.

Allen has published a book about the Sunbury Halter & Saddle 4-H Club, a book of railroad memories and a book of memories submitted by local folks about growing up and living in the Big Walnut area.

Recently, Allen completed another book, “More About the Big Walnut Community,” that’s being published by the Big Walnut Area Historical Society.

Myers Inn Museum curator Polly Horn said the 400-page book of remembrances and photos of the villages and townships that make up the Big Walnut community has been four years in making.

“In 2011, Suzanne compiled a 300-page book of memories she collected from residents of the area,” Horn said. “No sooner had the book been published when people began telling her more stories triggered from reading the original book. These memories became the core of the second book.”

Prepublication orders for the new book are now being taken, Horn said, and books will be available during Big Walnut Area Historical Society’s Heritage Day Celebration on Oct. 4 at the Myers Inn Museum.

To order a copy, visit the historical society website at BigWalnutHistory.org and follow the link to the order form. Order forms may be printed, completed and sent with a $42 check to BWAHS, Box 362, Sunbury, OH 43074. Add $6 if you want the book sent via mail.

Horn said order forms could also be picked up at the Myers Inn Museum during regular museum hours. The museum is open from noon to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

The museum is located at 45 S. Columbus St. in Sunbury.
