A memorial service has been scheduled for a Big Walnut High School student who passed away after being involved in a car accident Monday.
Mitchell Young, 16, was driving east on Sunbury Meadows Drive Monday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. when he attempted to turn left on State Route 3, according to troopers from the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Troopers report Young failed to yield at the posted stop sign and was struck by a southbound truck driven by Brian Wilson, 35, of Sunbury.
Troopers said Thursday that the investigation is still ongoing but no charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
Young and his passenger, a 15-year-old Big Walnut student, were flown by helicopter to area hospitals.
Young reportedly underwent surgery Monday night and passed away Tuesday, troopers said. The other student’s injuries were not life-threatening, troopers report.
Young and his passenger were reportedly on their way to football practice when the accident occurred. Young was an incoming sophomore.
Wilson was not seriously injured in the crash, troopers report.
The Big Walnut community has put together a number of tributes for Young, including a candlelight vigil on July 26 and a structure and rock painted by his teammates.
A Facebook page titled “Support for Mitchell Young” posted an update Thursday afternoon announcing a memorial ceremony and services for Young.
The post says: “The Memorial Ceremony for Mitchell Craig Young will be held at Big Walnut High School in Sunbury at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016. Immediately following the ceremony, a potluck reception will be held at Genoa Baptist Church, 7562 Lewis Center Road, Westerville, OH 43082. All are welcome to attend. Big Walnut athletic attire is appreciated.”
The post also states that food donations will be accepted at the church, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday
The post also indicates a memorial service will also be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1601 First St., in Moundsville, West Virginia, at 2 p.m. Sunday. A luncheon will be held immediately following the ceremony at the church.
The Facebook page for Big Walnut Youth Athletic Association featured a post Tuesday that stated Young was involved with flag football, swimming and football at Big Walnut Middle School and high school.
“In retrospect, I realize what an honor it is to have coached him as a flag football player and be witness to his growth and maturity,” Eric Montgomery, the BWYAA registrar, wrote in the post.
