The Delaware County Master Gardener Association has awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Skyler Foos of Ostrander.

Foos is attending Ohio State University and pursuing a bachelor of science degree in sustainable plant systems with a specialty in agronomy (science of soil management and crop production).

He grew up on a farm in Union County, is active in the FFA, works as an intern with the OSU Extension office, and is treasurer of the Crops and Soils Club at OSU.

The 2016 scholarship honored the contribution to gardening education in Delaware County of Nora Hiland. The Delaware County Master Gardeners applaud Hiland’s efforts to educate county residents on various horticulture topics, as well as helping the organization in other ways, association officials say.

Ohio Master Gardeners are Ohio State University-trained volunteers empowered to educate others with research-based gardening information. Almost 100 master gardeners in Delaware County answer questions, teach classes, perform community service, and attend programs to increase their horticultural knowledge.

In 2015, Delaware County Master Gardeners donated 4,270 hours of volunteer service in Delaware County and completed 2,118 educational hours in various advanced gardening topics.
