Safety event at BV East Monday

To help keep local children safe this school year, students, parents and community members will gather for a “back-to-school safety event” at Buckeye Valley East Elementary on Monday.

The 3 p.m. event will be at Buckeye Valley East Elementary, 522 E. High St., Ashley.

Buckeye Valley East students will attend an assembly aimed at promoting safety, according to organizers. The assembly will feature:

• Katie Karacson, Buckeye Valley East Elementary principal.

• Kimberly Schwind, AAA Ohio Auto Club senior public relations manager.

• Jackie Bain, Delaware General Health District safety coordinator.

The assembly will recognize the efforts of the school’s AAA School Safety Patrol students. This will include a visit from former Buckeye Valley East Elementary student Josie Piatt, who was inducted into the AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame in April. School leaders will also encourage students to “Be Safe, Be Seen” by wearing bright colored clothing, organizers said.

Outside, volunteers will provide parents waiting to pick up their children with “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” yard signs and bags filled with safety materials from AAA, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Delaware General Health District, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and other safety organizations.

Safety Patrol students will also demonstrate how they work to keep their peers safe as they leave the building to travel home.
