A 35-year veteran of the newspaper industry is the new editor of The Delaware Gazette and The Sunbury News.

Anthony Conchel began his duties Monday.

“I am excited to be working in this vibrant community,” Conchel said. “The pride this city has and the growth taking place in Delaware County make this an attractive place to work.”

Conchel most recently was editor of The Marion Star and The (Bucyrus) Telegraph-Forum, part of the Gannett company. He began his career as a sports/feature writer at The Coshocton Tribune in 1980.

“I am a staunch believer in community journalism and in The First Amendment,” Conchel said. “Our role is to accurately chronicle events taking place here, and to act as a watchdog for its residents.”

Conchel replaces Michael Williams, who has taken another position with Civitas Media, parent company of The Gazette.

“Michael did a fantastic job here and I plan to continue that commitment to excellence in our news operation. The reporting staff here is strong and I look forward to working with them to create quality content for our print and online platforms.”

Gazette General Manager/Media Director Sherry Fisher Scroggins said, “I look forward to working with Anthony. He is a passionate professional journalist with attention to detail. I am confident under his leadership the Delaware Gazette will continue to build on its commitment to local news and the community.”

Conchel has managed nine daily newspapers in Ohio and West Virginia and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from West Virginia University. At age 26 he became managing editor of his hometown newspaper, The Weirton (WV) Daily Times. He also has worked in public affairs/media relations.

“I bring a broad range of small newspaper market knowledge, but also a desire to adapt to the local culture,” he said. “I look forward to becoming involved in this great community.”
