Police are still investigating a high speed chase and shooting that left one man dead Monday night in Delaware County.

Officials from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation said Tuesday that they had not yet released the name of the man killed in the incident and said the cause of death is still under investigation.

Officials from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday that around 9:50 p.m. Monday night a chase began in Marion County when a vehicle failed to pull over for troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The chase headed south on U.S. 23, officials reported.

Jill Del Greco, the public information officer for BCI said Tuesday that during the chase gunfire was exchanged between the vehicles. Sheriff’s officials said the chase continued until spike strips were used to deflate the suspect’s tires and he crashed into a pole as he turned onto U.S. 42.

Del Greco said when officers approached the vehicle they found the driver had died. Del Greco said it was evident he died of a gunshot wound but it was unclear if it was from police or if it was self-inflicted. Del Greco said a handgun was recovered in the vehicle.

Del Greco added that the Delaware County Coroner’s Office was performing an autopsy and attempting to contact next of kin.

Officers from the City of Delaware Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies and troopers from the Marion and Delaware posts of the highway patrol were involved in the chase and shooting.

Apart from the suspect, no one was injured during the incident, Del Greco reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
