Delaware board elects new officers

The Delaware City Schools Board of Education elected a new president and vice president at its organizational meeting Monday night.

The board will elected board member Deb Rafeld to serve as Board President for the year and chose board member Matt Weller to serve as Board Vice President. Rafield has been a board member since 2006 and Weller has been a board member since 2008.

Previous President Frances O’Flaherty and Vice President Jayna McDaniel-Browning stepped down from their officer positions and are regular board members.

The board also approved the board meeting dates for 2017. The board would meet at 6 p.m. at Willis Education Center on Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, March 13, March 27, April 17, May 1, May 15, June 5, June 19, July 10, Aug. 7, Aug. 21, Sept. 5, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, Oct. 23, Nov. 6, Nov. 20 and Dec. 11.

Additionally, the board approved two change orders with 2K General Company for the ongoing construction at Carlisle Elementary School. First change order subtracted $3,151 from a $2,227,706 contract with 2K for construction at Conger Elementary and and the second change order subtracted $71,811 from a $4,450,694 contract with 2K for construction at Carlisle Elementary School.

The board also approved several staffing changes including approving the retirement of Earl Layman, a transportation mechanic since 2000 and approving the employment of Jamie Kehres, a cook/cashier at Hayes; Eric Collins, a cross categorical education assistant at Conger Elementary; Matthew Lewis, a custodian at Delaware Hayes High School and Francis Tankovich, a custodian at Hayes.

Additionally, the board approved an amendment to increase the fiscal year 2017 Permanent Appropriation Resolution in the amount of $10,000 for the District’s Special Trust Fund. The increase will make funds available to partner with the City of Delaware to make future improvements to crosswalks near Dempsey Middle School.

The meeting was held at 6 p.m. in the board room at Willis Education Center located at 74 W. William St.
