Airport may offer helicopter training

The Delaware Municipal Airport may soon offer helicopter training.

The city’s Airport Commission endorsed the Rotocraft Training Center after a presentation by the owner, Dale Bauer.

He and a friend purchased a helicopter and realized the cost to own were three times greater compared with owning a fixed-wing aircraft.

Bauer identified a need for helicopter training with the current closest location in Lancaster. There’s also interests from the Columbus Police Department’s helicopter unit, he said.

Colin Henry of Canal Winchester will be the chief flight instructor and who has 13,000 hours of flying.

With the commission’s support, Delaware City Council will hear the presentation at a future meeting.

In other business, the commission will submit comments to city staff over the next month for a “Request for Proposal,” or an RFP, for the solicitation of bids from consultants to draft the airport’s strategic business plan.

Staff will have a final version presented to the commission at its April 20 meeting before its released.
