Coffeology to offer ‘suspended coffee’

A free cup of coffee can be found in downtown Delaware.

Coffeology, 43 N. Sandusky St., has become a registered cafe as part of the Suspended Coffee movement in the United States. Customers can make an advance purchase of a cup of coffee or for someone who needs it, no matter the reason.

Owner Melissa Dixon said she heard about the movement last week.

“I wanted to jump on board right away,” she said.

The tradition traces back more than 100 years in Naples, Italy. John Sweeney started the movement in the United States in 2013.

Dixon said people can make a suspended purchase for other cafe products. As of Thursday, one customer has purchased four suspended coffees.

“I think it’s going to be exciting,” she said.

Dixon established her downtown business in September. The store features an espresso cafe, a collection of home furnishings, accessories, jewelry and 18th to mid-century antiques from across the nation.

Dixon has looked at ways to cross network with other downtown businesses such as placing business cards on some of her products. The cafe will donate tips from one day a month to a charitable cause, she added.

And the suspended coffees will continue throughout the year. Dixon hopes the movement will brighten peoples’ days.

“Right now it’s tumultuous times,” she said. “… There’s people who have heavy hearts.”

“I hope to never say no,” she said.
