Central Ohio Symphony premieres new works

When the Central Ohio Symphony under the direction of Jaime Morales-Matos takes the stage at Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan Campus in Delaware at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, the concert will contain both an Ohio and a U.S. premiere.

The Symphony will perform The Ferry Crossing by Ohio Wesleyan University professor Dr. Jennifer Jolley. Written in 2015 of her memorable experiences of taking the ferry across Lake Champlain between New York and Vermont, this work was commissioned and first performed by the Vermont Symphony.

Also debuting on the program is the U.S Premiere of a new arrangement by Richard Blackford of Saint-Säens’s popular Carnival of the Animals. You will hear music of the lion, elephant, kangaroos and many more animals.

The new arrangement showcases all of the same animals with an entirely different orchestration. Blackford was hosted by the Symphony in Delaware in 2015 for the U.S. premiere The Great Animal Orchestra.

The concert will close with Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, an orchestral work for large orchestra that is semi-autobiographical of the composer. Considered to be a pivotal work in orchestral music, it includes the sound of church bells. The finale is considered among the most exciting finishes in orchestral music.

Tickets for this concert only may be purchased at the Symphony Source office, 24 E. Winter Street in downtown Delaware or online at www.centralohiosymphony.org, or at the box office the afternoon of the concert. Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $6 for students of all ages, and $4 for children.

Information about the concert and ticket availability is available on the Symphony website, www.centralohiosymphony.org, at the Symphony office at 24 E. Winter Street, or by calling the Symphony at 740-362-1799.
