City of Delaware Police are still investigating a Tuesday night traffic incident at the intersection of U.S. 42 and U.S. 23 that left a Columbus man dead.

Delaware police report that at 10:35 p.m. Louis Ronald Catola III, 28, of Columbus was struck by a tractor trailer traveling northbound on U.S. 42 at the intersection of U.S. 42 and U.S. 23. The tractor trailer stopped and the driver remained on the scene until police and medics arrived.

Catola was transported to The Ohio State University Medical Center via helicopter with life-threatening injuries. Police report Catola later died due to his injuries.

The truck driver, Daniel L. Thacker, of Columbus, was not injured in the crash.

Police report that initial information they gathered indicates that Catola “may have been suffering from a behavioral health issue and purposefully entered the roadway in the path of the oncoming vehicle.”

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
