Radnor/Buckeye Valley banquet planned

The Honorees for the 110th Radnor/Buckeye Valley Alumni Association are as follows:

Virginia Thomas Marks: Virginia, or Ginnie, as she was known by her family and friends, was born and raised in Radnor. She grew up in the family home just across the street from the Radnor School Building. She graduated from Radnor High School in 1941.

In 1953, Virginia married Dale Marks and was a homemaker and mother to their children, Nancy, Jeff, and Tom. All 3 children attened Radnor Elementary School and graduated from Buckeye Valley. In 1966. she was hired as the elementary secretary at Radnor until she retired in 1991.

She enjoyed her interaction with all the children. Mrs. Marks is still remembered by many students when they reflect on their elementary school days,

Virginia served as the Treasurer for the alumni association for over 25 years, was an original member of the Radnor Fire Department auxiliary, was active in Radnor Baseball for Youth, and the Buckeye Valley Music and Athletic Boosters. She especially enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delaware.

Harold Richard Gearhiser: Harold, better know as “Dick” by family and friends was born and raised in Radnor, Ohio. He attended Radnor School from the first grade until he graduated in 1959. He enjoyed his years at Radnor with the most memorable were the ones playing basketball and baseball for Dick Meyer. He especially enjoyed being taught by the teachers that the alumni has honored in past years.

After graduation Dick joined his father in farming. He enjoyed raising purebred Charolais cattle in the 1960s and 70s. He worked at Tecumseh Products in Marion,Ohio, and then at PPG in Delaware.

He married Ruth Hedges in 1969. Dick asked Ruth for their first date at the 1965 Radnor Alumni Banquet held at Buckeye Valley High School. Two children were born to Dick and Ruth; Susan Mary and Matthew Richard. They are the proud grandparents of Sophia Claire, Henry David, and Gordon Wallace Hartfeil, all of Quincy, Michigan.

Dick served as the alumni president for several years. His tenure as president was enjoyed by all, especially with his brother Charlie. The two of them kept the banquet program lively and entertaining. Dick was a member of the Prospect St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for 60 years. The Radnor/Buckeye valley Alumni Association salutes Dick Gearhiser for his contributions to the Radnor Community.

A sad note to be added: Dick passed away on April 28, 2017. His being chosen as the Honoree this year meant so much to him. God bless his family and may you rest in peace.

The 110th banquet will be June 3, 2017. Make your reservations by contacting Mary Gay Williamson at 740-369-4742. The cost is $15 per person and must be paid in advance. The deadline for reservations is May 26.
