The Delaware man who pleaded guilty to robbing the Chase Bank in February was sentenced to three years in prison Monday morning.
Jose Angel Santiago Cintron, 42, appeared in Delaware County Common Pleas Court Monday morning to be sentenced for a count of kidnapping, a first-degree felony and a count of theft, a fifth-degree felony.
The charges stem from an incident at Chase Bank in downtown Delaware on Feb. 17. City of Delaware police reported that on the morning of Feb. 17, Cintron entered the Chase Bank with a knife, held the knife to a woman’s throat and demanded money.
Cintron left the bank with a bag of cash and was taken into custody by Delaware police officers 10 minutes later.
Cintron pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and theft charged at a change of plea hearing on April 10.
On Monday morning, his defense attorney, Scott Wolf, said that Cintron had lost his job and car and had fallen on hard times before committing the robbery.
The woman who had the knife held against her throat during the robbery spoke to the court Monday morning and said she has forgiven Cintron for the crime but believes he should be punished.
“I’m a forgiving person,” the victim said. “But this was a violent crime. He could have gotten money without putting my life in his hands.”
Cintron also addressed Delaware County Common Pleas Judge David Gormley during the hearing and said he was “depressed, scared and lost” when he committed the robbery and said that since the robbery he has lost everything.
“I’m really, really sorry,” Cintron told the victim at the hearing.
Gormley sentenced Cintron to serve three years in prison for the kidnapping charge and six months in prison for the theft charge. Gormley stipulated that the sentences will be served concurrently.
Gormley also credited Cintron the 94 days he has spent in the Delaware County Jail since his arrest.
Cintron was still in the Delaware County Jail Monday afternoon, awaiting transport to begin serving his prison sentence.
