OWU unveils 2015-16 calendar of events

Ohio Wesleyan’s 2015-16 arts calendar includes music, theater and dance, and fine arts events including “ORCHESIS 15/16,” an anual contemporary dance concert highlighting original work by OWU students and faculty.

Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its lineup of theatre & dance, music and visual arts events planned for the 2015-16 academic year.

Unless otherwise noted, all events are free to the public.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

• 8 p.m. Sept. 13 – OWU faculty recital including Mary Fetherston on cello, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St.

• 8 p.m. Sept. 22 – OWU faculty recital featuring soprano Jennifer Whitehead with Mariko Kaneda on piano, in Jemison Auditorium.

• 3:15 p.m. Oct. 4 – OWU student recital featuring Mu Phi Epsilon (international professional music fraternity) members, in Jemison Auditorium.

• 8 p.m. Nov. 6-7 – OWU opera workshop, directed by faculty member Jennifer Whitehead, in Jemison Auditorium.

• 8 p.m. Nov. 10 – OWU Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Michael Malone, in Gray Chapel inside University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St.

• 3:15 p.m. Nov. 15 – OWU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by faculty member Larry Griffin, in Gray Chapel.

• 8 p.m. Nov. 17 – OWU Park Avenue Jazz Ensemble, conducted by faculty member Larry Griffin, in Gray Chapel.

• 3:15 p.m. Dec. 6 – OWU Choral Art Society concert, conducted by faculty member Jason Hiester, in Gray Chapel.

• 8 p.m. Dec. 9 – “Lessons and Carols,” featuring sing-along Christmas carols and spiritual readings, conducted by faculty member Jason Keefer, in Gray Chapel.

THEATRE & DANCE

DEPARTMENT

• 8 p.m. Sept. 26 – “New Student Scenes” featuring promising OWU newcomers in scenes staged by this year’s directing class, on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave.. This event may contain adult themes and language.

• 8 p.m. Oct. 8-9; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 10 – “Arcadia” by Tom Stoppard. This play will be directed by OWU faculty member Ed Kahn and performed on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, OWU employees, and non-OWU students. Admission is free for OWU students with a valid OWU ID. • 8 p.m. Oct. 23-24 – OWU Fall Senior Project Productions featuring “Actions That A (Wo)Man Might Play” with OWU senior Hannah Simpson and “Dutchman” by LeRoi Jones with OWU senior Margot Reed. These performances will be held in the Studio Theatre inside Chappelear Drama Center, and may contain adult themes and language. Tickets are free, but required because of limited seating. • 8 p.m. Nov. 13-14 and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 – “ORCHESIS 15/16,” annual contemporary dance concert highlighting original work by OWU students and faculty, with artistic direction by faculty member Rashana Smith. ORCHESIS 15/16 will be performed on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, OWU employees, and non-OWU students. • 8 p.m. Dec. 4-5 – OWU Directing Class/Playwriting Class “One Act Plays” featuring student-directors and playwrights on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. This event may contain adult themes and language.

• 8 p.m. Feb. 18-20; 2 p.m. Feb. 21, 2016 – “Artifice” by 1988 OWU graduate Anne Flanagan. This play will be directed by OWU faculty member Bonnie Milne Gardner and performed on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, OWU employees, and non-OWU students. Admission is free for OWU students with a valid OWU ID. • 8 p.m. April 8-9, 15-16; 2 p.m. April 17, 2016 – “Red Hot & Cole” with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, and book by James Bianchi, Muriel McAuley and Randy Strawderman. The musical revue of the life and music of Cole Porter features more than two dozen famous Porter songs. Co-produced by OWU Departments of Music and Theatre & Dance, “Red Hot & Cole” features stage direction by Elane Denny-Todd and music direction by Jason Hiester. It will be performed on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, OWU employees, and non-OWU students. • 8 p.m. March 18-19, 2016 – OWU Spring Senior Project Productions featuring “Amicable Partings” by George S. Kaufman and Leueen MacGrath with OWU senior Sarah Shulman and “A Number” by Caryl Churchill with OWU seniors Chris MacDonald & Christian Sanford. These performances will be held in the Studio Theatre inside Chappelear Drama Center, and may contain adult themes and language. Tickets are free, but required because of limited seating. ART MUSEUM

• Aug. 20 through Sept. 23 – “Howard Little: Coming Home,” featuring paintings by Little and “Eric Nation: On and Off the Wall,” featuring furniture by Nation. Little (1883-1965) was an early California realist landscape painter who captured the essence of the new American frontier. Nation, who studies Little’s artwork, has been creating studio furniture and design/build projects since 1988. Nation, a former National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship recipient, will give an illustrated artist talk at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., followed by a reception from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Ross museum.

• Oct. 1 through Nov. 13 – “Oil Paintings” by Todd Gordon, who grew up in Delaware, and “Watercolors” by Paul Ching-Bor. A public reception for both artists will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at the museum.

• Dec. 1, 2015, through Jan. 31, 2016 – OWU’s fine arts faculty members display their latest works.

• Feb. 9 through March 27, 2016 – Sculpture by Walter Zurko and works from the museum’s permanent collection.

• April 9 through May 8, 2016 – Annual juried exhibition of works by OWU’s senior fine arts majors, featuring works by members of the OWU Class of 2016. The exhibit will open with a special Saturday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 9 at museum.
