Tonight’s Delaware City Council meeting will feature six first readings of legislation, and council will take action on at least one ordinance.
A temporary prosecutor has been requested for the city’s Prosecutor’s Office, because a current prosecutor is on extended sick leave. The position is considered a seasonal employee at a pay rate of $24 an hour, not to exceed $15,000. The ordinance declares an emergency, which means council may decide to suspend the rules requiring three readings of legislation, and make a decision tonight.
Another ordinance is whether to approve a conditional-use permit for an auto repair shop at 147 E. William St. The business was previously a gas station, but the 1/3-acre site has been vacant for more than a decade. The city’s planning commission approved the permit last week, with conditions that include no outdoor service, adding a tree lawn on Little Street, and having the entire parking lot repaved and striped within 18 months. There will likely be a public hearing on the matter at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22.
Whether to permit the sale and consumption of alcohol at the New Moon Half and Quarter Marathon on May 21 is another ordinance. The event is in its second year, and like last year, the organizer wants to have a beer garden on Sandusky Street. Proceeds will go towards the Delaware YMCA’s People Helping People program.
Also on the agenda is an ordinance on receiving Jail Tracker software from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office to also log inmates into the city jail. A fact sheet from city staff states: “This will be mutually beneficial as it will save time booking Delaware Police Department prisoners into the county jail, and it will save the city the cost of a new system. Currently, the city is using a booking system that is out of maintenance and failing.” The city will install the software.
There two other ordinances. One concerns partnering with the Delaware County Law Enforcement Against Pushers Program, a countywide multi-jurisdictional drug task force. The other is participating in the Delaware County Adult Protective Services Interdisciplinary Team which, the fact sheet states, “provides roles and responsibilities for preventing, reporting, investigating and prosecuting elder abuse cases in Delaware County.”
In addition, there will be a presentation from Delaware General Health District Commissioner Shelia Hiddleson and, time permitting, ethics training for council members from city attorney Darren Shulman.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. today on the second floor of City Hall, 1 S. Sandusky St.
