Delaware board moves ahead with Woodward, Smith construction

The Delaware Board of Education on Monday approved moving forward with upcoming construction projects at Smith Elementary and Woodward Elementary.

The only items on the board’s consent agenda were the approval of Woodward and Smith site plans and designs.

School officials report that construction at both schools will add classroom additions to accommodate fifth-grade students and will remove trailers currently being used as classrooms. The improvements will also add dedicated gyms to eliminate shared cafeterias/gyms at both schools.

Both schools will also receive additional parking areas and improvements to playgrounds.

Woodward will also receive improvements for traffic flow and the bus drop-off area.

The board approved the projects and authorized Fanning and Howey Associates to proceed with construction drawings, specifications, a final cost estimate and public bid documents.

The construction is being financed by a 2013 bond issue passed by voters, and is projected to begin in June and be completed by the start of 2017-18 school year.

The board also authorized two Hayes High School trips. The first is a swimming trip to Canton Feb. 25-27 and the second is an Ohio Scholastic Media Association journalism conference at Kent State University April 1-2.

The board approved a number of staffing changes including:

• Accepting the resignations of Amanda Hegemier, the school-age child care (SACC) site manager at Conger Elementary; Debra Covrett, a SACC assistant; Jennifer Davis, an SACC assistant at Schultz Elementary; and Rachel Jordan, a physical education teacher at Willis.

• The employment of Alicia McSweeney, an SACC assistant at Schultz, and Stacie McGuire, an intervention specialist at Schultz.

• A contract for Gary Daniels, the seventh-grade boys basketball coach at Dempsey.

The board’s next meeting is Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.
