The Liberty Township-Powell YMCA will hold the first of three Community Block Parties from 2-5 p.m. June 22 at Adventure Park.
“Our main goal is to bring physical fitness into the family’s life,” Director of Member Impact Michele Cannell told The Gazette. “We make it easy for families to walk to the park and participate in the event and then go back home, because we pick the parks that are closer to some bigger neighborhoods.”
The free event will feature physical fitness games, educational nutrition games, and healthy snacks that kids can make, Cannell said.
This is the second year for the Block Parties, which is also meant to raise awareness about the Liberty-Powell Y.
“We only did it at two different parks last year,” Cannell said. “This year, we have the help of the Powell Kiwanis, so we’re hoping it will be a little bit bigger at those three parks this year.”
The other block parties will be at Arbor Ridge Park on July 13 and Murphy’s Park on Aug. 10, both from 2 to 5 p.m.
“We are doing what we call family fun days, an inflatable or something for kids to do while their parents are exercising. We’re emphasizing our adult memberships throughout the summer. We’re taking 3-4 days throughout the month and emphasizing family fitness. For example, we have family zumba classes. We have family fitness challenges,” she said.
Cannell said the branch also hosts Summer Family Sundays, Parents’ Night Out on June 27 and other programs, such as four free SMART Start Appointments to members. The acronym refers to Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Oriented Goals.
The Liberty Township-Powell Y is at 7798 N. Liberty Road, Powell. For more information, call 614-839-9622 or visit ymcacolumbus.org.
