Free school supplies will be distributed from 1 to 4 p.m. July 18 at Woodward Elementary School, 200 S. Washington St.

The Supplies for Scholars event is free and open to any preschool through high school-aged child in Delaware County. In addition to the supplies, hygiene items and undergarments, shoe gift cards and haircuts from Great Clips will also be available.

“We’re giving away everything,” said United Way of Delaware County Vice President Barb Lyon. “It’s turning out to be an exciting event with a lot of corporate partners stepping up. Costco’s dropping off 140 backpacks.”

Many of the items donated to the cause were part of a Stuff the Bus campaign held June 16-21 at the Walmart in Lewis Center. Donors dropped off supplies at a bus or at other collection points in the county. In addition, the Delaware Walmart recently donated $2,000.

“We’re going to use that money to buy items for the back to school event Friday,” Lyon said. “We’re hoping to have enough for 500 kids to get ready for school. It’s really exciting.”

The two events were the brainchild of the United Way staff and Women’s Leadership Network volunteers, Lyon said.

“They recognized that if a family was in need of getting their child ready to go back to school, they had to go to multiple agencies,” she said. “Our goal was to be able to have everybody able to come to one location. We do recognize getting kids ready to go back to school can be a burden for families financially to buy all the supplies, shoes and the clothes. So we’re helping to alleviate some of that burden and make it a positive experience for kids.”
