Hayes pitched a shutout Wednesday, coupling a relentless offensive attack with lockdown defense to blank visiting Wellington 18-0 in a Division II regional tournament first-round showdown in Delaware.
The Pacers seemingly scored whenever they wanted to, netting five goals in the first seven-plus minutes of the first quarter to give them a 5-0 spread they maintained through the rest of the period.
Zach Kern opened the second with a goal less than a minute into the action, Collin Ward scored shortly after and Judson Huston found the back of the net less than 30 seconds later to give Hayes an 8-0 lead — an advantage it only added to as the game went on.
Huston led the attack, pouring in a game-high five goals. MacGregor Roberts, Ward and Cole Livermore were solid, too. Roberts closed with a hat trick while Ward and Livermore finished with two goals apiece.
While untested much of the way, Tyler Groth and Shawn Yost were solid in the win, combining for six saves.
•Big Walnut never got much of anything going, managing just two goals as host Watterson cruised to an 18-2 Division II regional tournament win Wednesday in Columbus.
Jhordan Lang and Joey Schooley scored the Golden Eagles’ goals while Derek Herman finished with 13 saves in goal.
