One of Battelle’s rising young stars has been recognized by an influential industry group.
Melanie Samsonow, a research associate at Battelle’s headquarters in Columbus, who grew up in Sunbury, recently was awarded the first ever Dr. Billy Richardson Award for Young NBC Researchers by the NBC Industry Group. The group includes more than 130 organizations that support nuclear, biological, and chemical defense (NBC).
The Dr. Billy Richardson Award was established to recognize exceptional young leaders with dedication and passion for any and all activities involving education and commitment to NBC defense. Richardson was one of the founding members of NBC Industry Group and its first chairman in 1996. He was a leader and champion of all things pertaining to the health of the NBC Community, both the government component and the industrial base.
Samsonow, who joined Battelle in 2009, is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and holds a BS in Biology. Her research work at Battelle has focused on microbiology, aerosol science and decontamination testing.
She accepted the award at a December event in Washington, D.C. and a $1,000 donation was made in her name to the Aberdeen Science and Math Academy in Aberdeen, Maryland.
The NBC Industry Group’s purpose is to educate the general public and government on NBC defense matters and to advance the development of NBC defense capabilities to protect the world against Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats. Member firms range in size from single professionals to corporations employing hundreds of subject matter experts dedicated to protecting America with the capability to respond to asymmetric warfare and CBRN terrorist threats.
