The City of Delaware has recently added a new trash can and a new truck to help collect trash.

A solar-powered trash can was placed along Sandusky Street last fall.

“By notifying us electronically when it needs to be emptied, it means that we don’t have to stop there when it doesn’t need to be and waste man-hours or gasoline,” said Lee Yoakum, Community Affairs Coordinator for Delaware. “So far, it’s worked as designed.”

The trash can is made by BigBelly Solar of Newton, Mass. The company’s website said, “BigBelly Solar was founded in 2003 with the goal of transforming one of the least efficient and resource-intensive industries on the planet — waste collection.”

Yoakum said the can is being used as part of a pilot program, and the city will see how efficiently it works during the summer months.

“We would need to weigh the cost of trash cans against the savings to the city,” Yoakum said. “The refuse containers aren’t cheap. They cost about $3,100 each, so it is important that we see a clear return on investment during the pilot program before considering proposing the purchase of additional cans.”

The city also recently purchased a new recycling vehicle. It looks like the city’s white loader trucks, and bears an orange recycling symbol. However, the recycling center is undersized and in disrepair.

Unlike some local communities, Delaware collects refuse and recycling weekly for residents and businesses.

“Delaware is a full-service city, and one of the services that the city provides is curbside refuse, recycling and yard waste pickup,” Yoakum said. “It’s our belief that curbside collection is one of those essentials and speaks to the quality of life of a community and is an integral service that a city can provide.”
