A public hearing regarding a church expansion will be held at 7:35 p.m. June 23 during the meeting of Delaware City Council.
The Church of The Latter Day Saints (Mormon) at 15 Rock Creek Drive is seeking an addition to the building and more parking.
Currently, the 2.38-acre site has a 7,678-square-foot church and a 73-space parking lot that was constructed in 1984. If approved, there would be a 3,962-square-foot addition and a new 33-space parking lot, bringing the total to 11,640 square feet and 106 parking spaces.
The building addition would be on the west end of the church, matching the existing building as closely as possible with two new entrance doors. The additional parking would be just north of the building and connect to the present parking lot. Three 18-feet high light poles would be installed in the new parking lot, similar in appearance to the other seven poles in the existing parking lot.
According to the City of Delaware’s Planning Commission report, “The site would be accessed by an existing full movement curb cut on Rock Creek Drive just south of the building and a new right-in/right-out curb on Rock Creek just north of the building into the new expanded parking lot. The southernmost curb cut on Rock Creek Drive would be eliminated in the building expansion.”
The church would construct a pedestrian path along West William Street.
The Planning Commission unanimously approved the church’s request at its meeting on June 4. Planning Director David Efland praised church officials for their organization.
