Several roadways were closed and residents were asked to evacuate or shelter indoors Tuesday after crews struck an unmarked 2-inch gas line near Smith Elementary School.

Residents in an area bordered by Pennsylvania Avenue, Sandusky Street, Fountain Avenue and Kirkland Street.

The line that was struck is located on Heffner Street near Liberty Street.

Several roads in the area were closed while emergency crews responded.

The roads were reopened after the gas was shut off, according to the City of Delaware.

The repairs were expected to take up to eight hours.
